Extract of a review of the WBHS Major Production, as published in the School Magazine :

Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd-Webber. Produced for Wynberg Boys’ High School by Gavin Povey. With pupils of Wynberg Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools’. ( Nico Malan Theatre)

It is a thought-provoking irony that a school’s theatrical production has been the first to play in both of the city’s major theatres, the Baxter and the Nico Malan.

And get standing ovations on opening night.
And enjoy sell-out runs …

It is also ironic that when the first run of the production, at WBHS itself, was imminent, the school asked us not to review it! But a parent, bless her, telephoned and urged us to see it. Her confidence was well-founded. The rest is history …

A monstrous irony, though, is SABC-TV’S last minute televising of the production. The corporation could have televised it in the first run at WBHS or, more importantly after its rave take-off at the Baxter. Now it has been left until this final run. The production will be over by the time it is telecast; on Video 2, I believe …

This production is not only a superb vehicle for inculcating a love of theatre at scholastic level but, going by its success, it has probably also brought a whole new audience to the theatre. Let’s hope they stay.
