School History & Philosophy
A Beacon of Comprehensive Education and Character Development
our proud heritage

Wynberg Boys’ High School, situated in Cape Town, South Africa, was founded on 1st July 1841 by John McNaughton. Hailing from Scotland, McNaughton established the school with an aim to offer a comprehensive education encompassing academics, culture, service, and sports. The philosophy of the school has always been to prepare its students for life in South African society through a well-rounded education.

Over the years, the school has nurtured a rich history, part of which is documented in its museum. This museum traces the history of the school and the Wynberg community. Currently, efforts are underway to digitize the museum’s collection, making it accessible online.

ABOUT US
history

In 1877, the South African College School was renamed Wynberg Boys’ High School to reflect its new location. Over the years, the school continued to grow and develop, offering a wide range of academic, cultural, and sporting opportunities for its students.

During the apartheid era in South Africa, Wynberg Boys’ High School played an important role in promoting non-racialism and equality. Despite the government’s policy of racial segregation, the school remained committed to providing a quality education for all its students, regardless of their race or background.

Today, Wynberg Boys’ High School is known for its tradition of academic excellence, as well as its strong emphasis on sports, arts, and community involvement. The school continues to uphold its values of inclusivity, diversity, and the pursuit of excellence, ensuring that each student receives a well-rounded education and is prepared for the challenges of the future.
