Over and above this, he has single-handedly recruited more debaters over the years and trained them accordingly, resulting in a much larger society of interested debaters.
Forbes Smith Trophy: Awarded to the winning House in the Inter-house Singing Competition – Littlewood
Smyly Trophy: Awarded to the boy or group of boys who produce the best project at the annual Wynberg Science Expo. Cole Abrahams and Maahier Sambo, whose aim was to find the best environment-friendly way to clean up oil spills in water with different salt concentrations and different ratios of oil to water. Mika-eel Rylands and Caleb Voskuil created Bio-plastic using various fruits and vegetables as the base ingredient. They then tested the tensile strength and the dissolution rate of each bioplastic.
Labia Prize: Awarded for an excellent history project. Thomas Burke. Thomas produced an outstanding project on the comparison between Donald Trump and Herbert Hoover in order to prove the argument that History repeats itself. The assignment warrants particular praise for the originality of its argument, in which the policies and personal characteristics of various USA presidents are evaluated thematically rather than simply chronologically.
Vincent Grainger Memorial Prize: Awarded for excellent performance in the SA Maths Olympiad. Daniel Weaver.
Donald Simons Award: Awarded to the Grade 10 pupil who has shown the most improvement over his academic performances in previous years. Julian Boulle – who has improved his aggregate by 5.2% and moved 17 positions in the grade to end up in 5th position at the end of Grade 10.
Stan Jones Prize: Awarded to the Grade 11 pupil who has shown the most improvement over his performances in previous years at school activities. Uzair Gire, who improved by 38 places from the end of Grade 10 to the end of Grade 11. He is now ranked 21st in the grade, having improved by 13.5% in total.
Alf Morris Award: Awarded to a Grade 11 pupil who is an all-rounder. Joshua Thomas. Josh’s dad and uncles attended Wynberg. He is involved in rugby and rugby refereeing. He was placed in the discus event at sports day and plays water polo. He works really hard on his academics.
Neville Blackbeard Trophy: for the Tutor Group with the best spirit. Mr Searle’s Tutor Group.
This group respond positively by stretching themselves and bringing a positive energy to school on most mornings. Both of the Glebe leaders for 2020 come from this tutor group. The tutor group is so popular, that the House Head needs to go and remove strays from time to time who just want to be part of the positive vibe created by this group.
Fine Family Bursary: Phil Masango. This boy has a wonderful bearing, works hard and is a natural leader.
Anthony Morris Prize: Awarded to the Grade 8 pupil who has shown the most loyalty to the school by his participation in school activities. David Morgenrood. This boy plays A team basketball, soccer and water polo, and B team Hockey. He is involved in service through serving on various committees – including being a grade 8 RCL rep, received an award for his role in the Inter-House plays, and is a top academic, coming 8th in the grade with an average of 83%.
David Levitt Memorial Trophy: Awarded to the Grade 10 pupil who was an inspiration to all his fellow students. Christopher Kleynhans. He is the Interact President for 2020, a member of the Social Cohesion Core Committee, the McNaughton Core Committee and the Service Core Committee. He is also the Head of the Blood Drive Peer Promoters. Chris also heads up the Soup Kitchen, which is hosted at Wynberg Girls’ High School. He fulfills the role of Student Manager for swimming and is also a member of the Swimming Team. He was responsible for directing the House Plays and Inter-House singing. Chris is the Head of First Aid and is himself a Level 3 First Aider.
The Neil and Cecil Jowell Achiever Award: Awarded for demonstrating Wynberg Values (to a boy who has demonstrated significant determination and perseverance; who expresses by his actions that he resonates with the school’s values). Adrian Giddey. A true Wynberg boy who holds to our value system and behaves accordingly. He aims high academically. On the sports field he is involved in basketball and hockey. He is always willing to help out during tutor period and has been a great buddy to his grade 8’s.
