The Jamie Tindill Memorial Chess Tournament was first held in 2010 as an inter-schools event that ran as such until 2019. Normally held at the end of the second term, the 2020 lockdown meant its cancellation last year. Mr Larry Moser explains the tournament, its significance, and the 2021 return as an inter-house event:

This Tournament serves to keep alive the memory of one of Wynberg’s finest Chess players who died tragically while still at school. Jamie was a wonderful young man, a member of the WP Chess team, and had been appointed as a Prefect at the end of his Grade 11 year in 2007, but drowned during the December holidays.

He was held in such high esteem by the matric class of 2008 that they raised money to purchase benches, plants, and a plaque to adorn the School’s outdoor chessboard.

To remember Jamie’s contribution to Chess and to honour his memory we started a short Tournament at Wynberg in 2010. Varying formats have been tried with up to 12 participating teams.

We were unable to host this Inter-Schools Tournament last year due to Covid-19 restrictions and find ourselves in a similar predicament in 2021. To ensure this event proceeds as one of our annual highlights, this year sees it being held as an Inter-House competition.

The players in the top three teams, including their House Captains, will be awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals, with the winning House’s name inscribed on the trophy for 2021.
