View the Flickr photo collection of matches vs Bishops

Notwithstanding sport still being voluntary at this stage, masks, and social distancing on the fields, one could be forgiven on Friday and Saturday for thinking ‘What pandemic?’ as all the sportsmanship and excitement of a traditional derby encounter with Bishops played out, home and away.

The weekend’s fixtures against Bishops allowed for a welcome return for many young Wynberg cricketers after a lengthy break. Fortunately, the weather played its part in allowing all the matches to be completed.

The 1st XI fixture on the Frank Reid provided some really good cricket with Wynberg playing only their second match of the term against a Bishops side playing their fixture of the year.

It’s refreshing to see the Junior age groups playing with much freedom and expressing their skills after the break. This weekend Rondebosch will, once again, test their game and hopefully lead to many experiences on the playing field they’ll remember for years to come!

3rd XI vs Bishops, T20
WBHS 135/8 D Stevenson 60*
Bishops 106/10 J Viljoen 3-15

Wynberg won by 29 runs.

WBHS 3XI started their summer with a win against Bishops, on a picturesque Silverhurst A on Friday afternoon. Wynberg won the toss and Chris Malan, the newly appointed captain, elected to bat. Wynberg lost 3 early wickets within the power play. Dylan Stevenson and Shukri Abrahams steadied the ship and built a solid partnership to get us into a healthy position. Dylan ended his innings on 60*, helping Wynberg climb to 135/8.

Bishops got off to a flying start with the bat but the change in pace, bringing on spinners, proved to be successful. The slow wicket suited our spin bowlers, with Jack Viljoen picking up 3-15, in his first match for the 3XI. Wynberg was outstanding in the field, with 2 run outs and a stumping, as well as encouraging the bowlers throughout the hot, summer’s day. Wynberg ended up winning by 29 runs and look ahead to the game against Rondebosch.

Man of the match: D. Stevenson for his 60*
