Wednesday 27 July 2022: After a two-year gap when we were unable to hold the Tournament due to Covid, Wynberg was able to host the Jamie Tindill Memorial Chess Tournament again. The twelfth Tournament took place recently over two days, with six other schools accepting the invitation this year. The Pool games were played in one week and the knock-out matches the following week. Unfortunately, our B team did not make it past the Pool stages, but our A team were in devastating form, winning all their pool games and topping the pool. The top four sides returned the following week to contest the semi-finals and finals.

Westerford narrowly beat Groote Schuur in one semi-final (3½ – 2½) while in the other semi-final Wynberg won every game against Bergvliet. The final was won by Wynberg (the second time Wynberg has lifted the trophy) with Bergvliet claiming the Bronze medal by the narrowest of margins – the match was tied and a count-out had to determine the winners.

The Wynberg teams consisted of:

A Team: Kevin Karengera, Fayyaaz Harnekar, Keean Vassen,Connor Manuel, M Saalih Tasriet, Damian Hetherington

B Team: Ethan Pinn, Liam Storey, Daniel Budge, Ashton McCormick, Sebastian de Klerk, Jordan Cridland, Amien Gierdien

The Tournament’s Arbiter was Guy Green, a dependable Old Boy, who continues to give back to the school.

Board prizes were won by Wynberg boys at boards 1 (Kevin Karengera – 3 wins and a draw), 2 (Fayyaaz Harnekar – 4 wins and a draw), 4 (Connor Manuel – 5 wins), and 5 (M Saalih Tasriet (5 wins).
