Tuesday 13 February 24: WBHS’ academic achievers of 2023 and their families gathered in the Clegg Hall for the annual Prize Giving ceremony. Congratulations to the winners and recipients of special awards announced on the night.
The Ryno Greenwall Prize:
Awarded for the most original history project of the year.
Awarded to Nathan Preston
The History Department had the following to say:
He researched “Police Brutality Then and now”. Nathan combined South African history and American history and brought to light how many things have not changed, especially in America and the Southern States. He looked at the case study of Steve Biko who was murdered in police custody during apartheid and then went on to research and write on George Floyd’s brutal public murder. The connections were original and the arguments well-developed.
The Smyly Trophy:
Awarded for the best Science Expo.
Awarded to Muzzamil Solomon & Zachary Gibbon
Muzzamil and Zachary entered the Energy Category for the annual Eskom Science Expo. Their project looked at “a comprehensive comparison of diesel and biodiesel as an energy fuel source”. After winning gold medals in the Energy category at regionals, as well as the Eskom Prize for the Best Energy Project, they were selected to take their project to the national competition in Johannesburg. Here, they won further gold medals as well as laptop prizes from FFS Refiners for the “most ingenious use of available material while conducting scientific research experiments in the field of non-renewable energy”.
This was also the first time that Wynberg had progressed this far in the competition.

Awarded to Shadley Allie
Shadley is a member of the 1st XI Cricket team as well as a 2nd XV Rugby team player. He is also a provincial lifesaver.
David Levitt Memorial Trophy:
Awarded to the Grade 10 pupil who was an inspiration to all his fellow students.
Awarded to Zachary Gibbon
Zach has not only enhanced the name of the school during his Grade 10 year but also been one of the emerging leaders of his grade group at Wynberg. He has consistently been the top academic during his high school career and gives back to the academic pillar by being a Bridging the Gap tutor. On the sporting front, he was the only Grade 10 to represent Wynberg in the 1st Hockey Team in 2023, also going on to represent Western Province in the winning 16A IPT Hockey side and being selected as part of the u16 SA High-Performance Team. He serves the school as part of the committees of his house, Glebe, as well as the Sports committee. He was chosen by his peers as one of the RCL Grade Reps and is on this committee as well. Zach also participates in the service pillar. Not only is his involvement an inspiration to his peers, but his ability to remain a humble and servant-hearted leader is something to admire.
The Neil and Cecil Jowell Achiever Award:
Awarded for demonstrating Wynberg Values to a boy who has shown significant determination and perseverance, who expresses by his actions that he resonates with the school’s values.
Awarded to Johan Fourie
Johan is a true Wynberg Man, demonstrating values of friendliness, honesty, and integrity at all times. He displays the Supera Moras spirit often, something which can be seen in his climb to be a part of the 1st XV Rugby Training Squad. Academically, his marks are of good standard but what is more notable is his ability to aim high and set goals for himself.
