Monday 6 February 23: The report on WBHS 1st X1 vs Rondebosch, as published in the Cape Argus – re-published, with permission of and credit to, Mogamat Goosain Abrahams.
The much-awaited schools clash at Wynberg between the hosts and Rondebosch went down to the proverbial wire with Wynberg prevailing by 2 runs in a nail-biting finish.
Wynberg won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that was exploited to the full by Raeeq Daniels the Bosch quick bowler who took the first three wickets to fall as Wynberg crashed to 19/4.
It was left to their in-form middle-order batsman, Beni Hansen (74), to resurrect the innings. First, he and Sange Mbuto (26) put on 66 for the fifth wicket. Then a quick-fire innings by David Linde (47) enabled them to gain the ascendancy with a 91 run partnership. Eventually, the innings closed on 214 with Davids snaring 4/39.
In reply the strong Bosch batting lineup made an equally catastrophic start losing their first 4 wickets with a paltry 9 runs on the board. Xolela Hoyi the Wynberg opening bowler who ended with 3/40 picking up the first three wickets with the new ball.
Throughout the carnage Gavin Sulcas (101) the Bosch number three batter stood firm. He found a willing partner in Declan Gillespie (65)and between the two they put on a mammoth 167 for the 5th wicket and they were seemingly coasting to victory at 176 /4. Then Linde struck with his leg spin to dismiss Sulcas and soon afterward Gillespie was dismissed on the same score. From then on it was downhill for Bosch as the innings imploded. Notwithstanding a spate of dropped catches, Wynberg’s Shadley Allie hung on to the last two and helped his team pull off what at one stage looked like an unlikely victory. Linde completed a fine double with 5/43.
