Monday 20 February 23: The report on WBHS 1st X1 vs Affies, as published in the Cape Argus – re-published, with permission of and credit to, Mogamat Goosain Abrahams.

Wynberg bounced back to the victory trail in fine style with a twenty-run win over Affies from Pretoria. After their surprise 7-wicket defeat to Grey High of Gqeberga on Friday, they were determined to redeem themselves.

They elected to bat on a docile pitch and openers Paul James (95), and Kyle Williams (46) made their intentions clear from the start. They were hell-bent on occupying the crease with a painstaking opening partnership of 153 before Williams departed.

James wasn’t going to throw it away as he dug deep to face 121 balls in compiling 95 which included 9 boundaries. He was dismissed narrowly missing out on a deserved century.

It was left to the in-form Beni Hansen to accelerate the innings with a quickfire 56 off 35 balls including 5 x 4, 1 x 6 as they reached 236/3 off 50 overs.

In reply, Affies lost early wickets but opener Jorich van Scalkwyk (65) stood firm. With little support from the middle order, it was left to Arne Prinsloo (35) at number eight to keep them in the hunt. But with the run rate required increasing their Innings folded and they were dismissed for 216. For Wynberg seamer, Calvin Tanner (3/21) and spinner Naas Beets (3/24) aided by excellent ground fielding were the wreckers in chief.

Wynberg beat Affies by 20 runs

Wynberg 236/3 ( Paul James 95, Beni Hansen 54, Kyle Williams 46)

Affies 216 ( Jorich van Wyk 65:, Calvin Tanner 3/21, Naas Beets 3/24)
