Nomads 2022: Wynberg Hockey on Tour

Official 1st XI kit handover by the sponsor, Wynberg Old Boy Mr Simon Martin of Tayla Sportswear, and Headmaster, Mr Deon Scheepers

25 – 28 March 2022: Wynberg Hockey U14, U16, and U19 A-sides head on tour for the first time since 2019 as the Nomads Festivals return.  Our best wishes to all teams and management, we look forward to reporting on the tours in the days ahead.

A Brief History of Nomads

The Nomads Festivals can trace their roots from the original Northern and Southern Ascension Festivals, both named for the then long school Ascension Day weekend when the Festivals were traditionally held.

Nomads was originally a 1st XI Festival, and out of it arose the U16 and U14 versions. The last Ascension Festival (2004) was hosted by St Andrew’s in Bloemfontein at Grey College (as St Andrew’s didn’t have an Astro). The 2005 Grey College and 2006 Grey High School festivals were anniversary festivals for their respective schools. These events, along with the Selborne’s Anniversary Festival in 2007, were undoubtedly precursors of Nomads as this was the period when discussions began and the Nomads group formed. The first official Nomads Festival took place in 2008 at King Edward VII School.  [Info thanks to Tony Godding & Mike Bechet – Ed.]
