Wednesday 4 May 2022: The third in our series of ‘Meet our Music Staff’ – Mrs Natalie Karg.
Natalie started the piano at the age of seven at Aliwal Road Primary in Wynberg. Violin and singing lessons followed at the age of nine. Natalie continued with her music matriculating from Wynberg Girls’ High School where she took music as a double subject.
Straight after school, she enrolled at UCT for a B. Mus (Ed) degree and while studying began part-time teaching at Muizenburg Junior School. Upon graduation she was appointed Head of Music at Muizenburg, teaching there for five years. During that time, she developed the Junior Primary music and started a school orchestra.
In 2004 she moved to Reddam House Constantia, later becoming Head of Music in the Junior School. While at Reddam she championed musical theatre, producing 1 to 2 shows annually and running her own private voice studio after hours.
In April 2020, Natalie joined the staff at WBHS. This coincided with the initial lockdown, so she was only able to meet her pupils in person for the first time several months later! Natalie teaches piano, violin, and voice and is the director of the Vocal Ensemble and accompanist of the Choir. She is also the teacher in charge of WBAA.
Outside of the school environment, Natalie is part of the leadership of music at the Claremont New Apostolic Church. Here she is a part-time organist and also plays the violin in the church orchestra. It is worth noting that this is somewhat of a family affair as both her father and son are also members of the church orchestra – so regular music-making as a family is celebrated.
Natalie is married to Al and has a daughter, Harley, in Grade 2 at WGJS. Her son Thomas matriculated from Wynberg last year with the distinction of being a Gold Badge prefect with the RCL portfolio among his many responsibilities.
Personal hobbies include an interest in make-up artistry, particularly for the stage as well as cooking and wine tasting (and drinking with Mr Haigh – her former classmate at UCT) in her downtime!
