Upgrade to the Bill Bowden Pavilion

Wednesday 27 February: With the advent of the 2019 winter sports season, the Wynberg Old Boys’ Union have begun the process of upgrading the Bill Bowden Pavilion, Home of the Old Boys, to cater to expanded usage in advance of the Standard Bank Wynberg Winter Sports Festival, 20 – 25 March.

  • Phase 1 to be completed by 19 March: extending the cover around the Hawthornden Field side to provide full summer shade and inclement weather protection, incorporating drop-down sides to increase the indoor area for functions.
  • Phase 2 follows after the Sports Festival: extension of the Pavilion toward the Alf Morris Centre to include a built-in braai area and a pizza oven.

WOBU President, Karl Westvig, comments: “There is always great support and spirit for 1st XV games and all sports across the Wynberg Campus.  However, the existing cover around the Pavilion is limited in adverse weather, and the current temporary tent blocks out some of the most amazing views of Table Mountain and Devil’s Peak.

Roland van Rosenveld (Matric 1975) of South Architects has kindly prepared the plans and impressions, and Tony Marshall from Cape Shade has discounted his installation of the cover.  Andrew Symonds (Matric 1988) has offered building materials at cost, and Des de la Mare will build the braai structure. The 2018 Matrics have raised money to contribute to the building of the braai area as their Matric Legacy. Our thanks to them all!”

Pledging Support

Within hours of Headmaster, Jan de Waal, and Karl Westvig’s personal pledges of R5000 each toward the estimated R250 000 cost of the project, Old Boys’ individual pledges have brought the total to in excess of R180 000. Let’s all help to make Wynberg that much better for all Old Boys and all future Old Boys!

Please email your pledge to Carol Ramsay in the Old Boys’ Office at WBHS: All donations will be administered by the Supera Moras Trust.
