An Invitation to Wynberg Conversations: Schoolboy Rugby, Wednesday 8 June 2022

Wednesday 8 June 2022: WBHS is pleased to announce the first in a new series of in-person meetings between staff, guests, families, and Old Boys – Wynberg Conversations. The inaugural event will be held in the Bill Bowden Pavilion from 18h30 –  20h00 ” … About Schoolboy Rugby”.

The evening will be a panel discussion about the differences in schoolboy rugby across provinces – Free State, Eastern, and Western Cape – between Deon Scheepers (WBHS Headmaster), Gerry Posthumus (1st XV Head Coach, St Andrew’s College), Peter van Schalkwyk (WBHS Deputy Headmaster & Head of Sport), Craig Childs (WBHS Director of Rugby), Justin van Winkel (WBHS 1st XV Coach), and special guest, Nic Groom (Professional player – Stormers, Lions, Edinburgh, and London Irish).

Other aspects of schoolboy rugby on the table will be the effects of Covid on the game, player welfare, changes in the standard of the game over the last few decades, and professionalism at schoolboy level – how far should it go?

The evening will be a wonderful opportunity for families, supporters, and Old Boys to hear firsthand from school management and dedicated school coaches, and get an insight into rugby beyond just the Hawthornden Field.

Tickets are R100 per person including light snacks. Numbers are limited and should the response exceed the capacity of the Pavilion, the event will move to the WBHS Clegg Hall.

Online RSVP is essential for catering purposes and to secure a ticket. Booking close 12h00 Tuesday 7 June 2022. Regret no U18s and school-goers.

Copies of the 2021 publication 25 Great South Africa Rugby Schools will be available on the night at R495 per copy.
