Supera Moras News: Friday 17 January 25

Friday 17 January 2025:  Weekly Newsletter Term 1, Issue 1 available on the link.

Deputy Headmaster, Mr Peter van Schalkwyk, writes:

Welcome back – and a special welcome to our Grade 8s, the Matric Class of 2029!

Besides welcoming the boys back for the new academic year, we also experienced two other big events this week – the announcement of the 2024 Matric results on Tuesday and the Grade 8 hike and Blazer Ceremony on Wednesday.

This is such an exciting time for our Grade 8s as they enter a new stage in their lives. We make a special effort at Wynberg to welcome these new young men into our endless chain. We trust that the boys enjoyed the obstacle course, the water slide, and the sleepover on the field, but also hope that as they conquered the mountain, entered the Memorial Gates, rang the bell, and received their blazers from their Matric buddy, they realised the importance and meaning of taking their place in this “endless chain” of Wynberg brothers. They are now Wynberg Men and with that comes responsibility and privilege. Our boys normally have to battle the January heat on Table Mountain, but this year they had to face a different challenge on the mountain – rain and a bitterly cold breeze.

We also thank our new Matrics for everything they have done this week to make the transition into Wynberg as smooth as possible for these Grade 8s. It was probably not their first choice to wake up at 05:00 to tackle the same hike they did in Grade 8, but they did it with the same commitment and gees that Matrics before them have done.

Hopefully, this hike will prepare our new recruits for the three–day Supera Moras hike in Grade 9 and the Nyamezela in Grade 10. These three hikes are all important milestones in a Wynberg boy’s right of passage through his five years at Wynberg and maturing into a young man. One of the cornerstones of our school ethos is to engender a sense of grit and determination in our boys, the ability to tackle adversity and not to shy away from it. We trust that these three physical challenges will help develop that Supera Moras spirit in our boys. The hike this week was the first step in this direction.

Besides welcoming the Grade 8s to Wynberg this week, we also welcomed back our Matric Class of 2024 and our youngest crop of Old Boys to receive their results. Hopefully, all these Matrics of 2024 achieved the results that they worked so hard for.
