Wednesday 25 May 2022: The latest in our series of ‘Meet our Music Staff – Ms Arianna Carini, Part-time Classical, Bass, and Electric Guitar teacher – WBHS
Arianna’s journey into music started with piano lessons from her mother, a qualified music teacher, at the age of five. She began guitar at the age of nine, picking it up naturally after observing and learning from her older brother Fabio.
In school, she was the leader of the band and began arranging music herself for their performances. Musical involvement during her high school years extended to choir, drum circle, and playing the guitar for a SAMA nominated jazz band outside of school.
Arianna performed as a classical guitar soloist with the KwaZulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestra during her Grade 10 and 11 years – a great honour for a young musician. She was also a keen sportswoman being a top swimmer and captain of the 1st Team Netball, Soccer, and Hockey at her school.
After school, she studied for a B. Mus (Performance) degree at UCT, during which time she began teaching at WBHS and more latterly WBJS. At WBHS she has developed a strong guitar studio and started the Guitar Ensemble this year. She has also been heavily involved in the Concert in the Quad and has arranged music for concerts and Matric final exams for our pupils.
Outside of teaching, she plays professionally in and around South Africa for various artists, namely The Lady Day Big Band, Zolani from Freshly Ground, and Simphiwe Dana among others.
