 School Governing Body: School Counsellor

Wynberg Boys’ High School is looking for a Counsellor registered with HPCSA or SACSS to contribute to the work of the school’s pastoral and student support teams by providing expert counselling and psycho-social support to individual learners and groups of learners to help them overcome emotional, personal, and social barriers to learning and well-being.

Key Requirements:

  • Matric Certificate.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology or an associated field.
  • Registered with the HCPSA/SACCSS essential.
  • 2 years minimum professional experience in school counselling will be advantageous.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Facilitation and counselling experience between clients in need and offering relevant support.
  • Vast knowledge in individual, group, and family case interviews to identify the nature and extent of problems.
  • English language fluency.
  • Clear criminal record.

Key Responsibilities: (not limited to)

  • Provide counselling support for learners.
  • Screen and assess the needs of referred learners and determine the appropriate level of support.
  • Managing a caseload of learners who require confidential one-to-one counselling or therapeutic group work.
  • Psychoeducation for teachers and students, including workshops, Life-Orientation presentations, skills development, and mental health programmes.
  • Provide support and conduct psychoeducational workshops for hostel students.
  • Identifying the next steps for learners requiring further psycho-social support and ensuring appropriate referrals to external medical professionals are made.
  • Maintaining accurate and detailed case notes and records of work undertaken with each student.
  • Collaboration with the pastoral care team and participation in weekly pastoral case discussion meetings.
  • Provide emergency crisis intervention and containment on scene.
  • Multidisciplinary collaboration with parents, teachers, and external medical professionals.
  • Building positive relationships with the parents of learners who are receiving support.
  • Ensuring that therapeutic support is provided in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Report writing
