30 Years of the Wynberg Grey Weekend

From the first Wynberg Grey Weekend in 1996, the event continues to grow in size annually, but with the students as competitive as ever.  This sporting and cultural exchange was the first of its kind in South Africa, and the brainchild of WBHS Headmaster of the time, Bruce Probyn, a former Wynberg Head Prefect, and the Rector of Grey.

Where we had to abandon the 1999 edition in advance due to appalling Cape Town weather, and lost 2 years’ during the pandemic, the event has been back at full strength, and growing since 2022 – this year 657 WBHS students and 75 staff travelled to Grey High in a two-stage departure using 14 buses, and a few sponsored cars.

Our sincere thanks to Grey High School and its parent body for their hospitality and for opening their homes to host so many of our Wynberg Men. And to our parents and families who took to the road to support our teams in Gqeberha, your presence and passion are invaluable to our teams, and adds to the remarkable spirit at Grey during their important Reunion Weekend. We are enormously proud to be Grey’s choice of visiting school when they celebrate their version of our Wynberg Heritage Week. Long may our friendship and rivalry continue in this magnificent weekend of competition that creates incredible memories and builds lifelong friendships.

To our school sponsor, Suzuki Kenilworth, massive appreciation for our Swift that powered the trip, and SMG Tokai for climbing in with Wynberg Rugby and for the use of two of their vehicles to transport equipment and staff to and from Grey.
